CHRISTUS Health
Healthcare

This project for CHRISTUS Health Medical Center (St. Mary’s Outpatient Center Mid-County) involved creating a 39,000 square-foot specialty healthcare facility through the renovation of an existing commercial building.
The project repurposed a former grocery store into a comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care center, strategically located to serve Jefferson County and bridge services between CHRISTUS Health’s St. Elizabeth and St. Mary’s campuses.

The facility was planned to accommodate a wide range of healthcare services within a fixed building footprint. Program spaces include a two-bed inpatient hospital suite, an emergency department with ten treatment rooms, imaging services (X-ray, ultrasound, CT, and MRI), patient labs, wound care, a women’s center, physical and occupational therapy, sports medicine and concussion testing, dietary and kitchen facilities, and an on-site pharmacy.

Because the existing structure could not be expanded, the design prioritized efficiency within a fixed footprint. In collaboration with CHRISTUS Health’s IT team, a digital appointment system was introduced to reduce waiting areas and free up space for clinical and program needs.
Organized in a mall-style layout, the interior offers clear, intuitive pathways to each function while allowing space for gathering and reflection. The facility houses the first two-bed hospital in the state of Texas and helps strengthen access to care between Port Arthur and Beaumont.
