Private Airport Hangar

Miscellaneous

The Private Airport Hangar was designed as the first private 6,800 square foot airplane hangar at McGhee Tyson Airport. The facility was planned to accommodate two planes and an RV while meeting all applicable airport design guidelines.

The design explored how the owner travels and hosts guests. A sitting area with a kitchenette and bathrooms was incorporated on the lower level, along with a flexible space that can be used for meetings or storage.

Notable features include: a small sitting area and personal kitchenette separated from the hangar by an all-glass overhead door, a 500 square foot mezzanine for meetings or storage, and stairs constructed of compressed plywood with a stained finish and steel cable railings.

The hangar includes large ceiling fans for air circulation and a large automated overhead door providing access to the runway, and has since served as a model for future private hangars at the airport.
