The Emerald Haslam Sansom Ministry Complex is a 37,000 sq ft community center designed to serve as a hub for connection, wellness, and youth development in Knoxville’s Lonsdale neighborhood. The facility brings together a wide range of programs (including fitness, education, healthcare, and the arts) within a single, accessible space rooted in the surrounding community.

Building placement played a critical role in shaping this project. The facility was positioned at the corner of Sherman Street and Texas Ave to establish a strong edge while stepping the scale down to relate to the surrounding residential streets. This approach reinforced the building’s connection to the neighborhood and helped it feel integrated rather than imposed.
A pedestrian boulevard extends from Minnesota Avenue, guiding neighbors into the site and toward tutoring spaces, community rooms, and two large outdoor multipurpose fields. Inside, a two-story central gathering area connects the building’s many functions.
Key features include: two gymnasiums with basketball courts, two large outdoor fields with synthetic turf, a calling and career center, worship and community rooms, exercise and fitness spaces, locker rooms, a performing arts room with a stage, office and study spaces, and a concession area with kitchen.
